Telecommunication Vocabulary
- Bandwidth (the width of a band of electromagnetic
frequencies)-- how fast data flows on a given transmission path (or the
width of the range of frequencies that an electronic signal occupies on a
given transmission medium). Any digital or analog signal has a bandwidth.
- Baud Rate--the
speed at which data (0&1) is transmitted. (bits per second)
- Bulletin
Board System (BBS)--a place on the network where public messages can be
left and one message can reach all users
- Cyberspace--being
on-line through a computer
- Download--receiving
a file from another computer
- Electronic
Mail (E-Mail)--messages that are sent and received over a computer
network
- Global
Village--people around the world joined together through electronic
communication
- http--hypertext
transfer protocol
- Hyperlink--a
link on a web page that connects to another web page or a multimedia
resource (arrow becomes a hand)
- Hypertext--text
which contains a hyperlink
- Hypermedia--a
hyperlink that links to other forms of media: graphics, sound, video, etc.
- Information
Highway--information networks of data that are available when you go
on-line.
- Internet--A
global network of many smaller computer networks.
- Log Off--disconnecting
electronically from a computer system
- Log On--connecting
electronically with a computer system or service usually by entering your name and a password
- Modem--allows
computer signals (0&1) to be sent over telephone lines
- Network--two
or more computers connected together
- On-line--electronically
connected through the use of a modem and telephone line, cable modem, or DSL
- Telecommunication--communicating
over a distance. Some examples of
information that can be telecommunicated are files, programs, data, text,
music, sound, clip art, graphics, video, and photographs.
- Telecomputing--computers
sending or receiving information by electronic means
- World Wide
Web--Internet interface that contains millions of hypertext documents.
- Upload--sending
a file from one computer to another
