Cognitive Teaching Strategies
Instruct students to open the file, "Britain1dpt".

The teacher will demonstrate the View menu explaining each item:
1. Page Layout vs Normal
2. Ruler
3. Toolbar (menu bar vs. toolbar)
4. All Characters (2 spaces after punctuation at the end of a sentence, one space after a word)
5. Header/Footer
6. Zoom

Student Practice: The teacher gives directions asking students to check with their partners to verify if directions are followed successfully.
1. Turn off the toolbar
2. Turn off the ruler
3. Choose normal view
4. Turn off all characters
5. Type your name in the header
6. Zoom to 50, 100, 75% (ending with their document in 75%)
7. Turn on Toolbar, Ruler, All Characters, and Page Layout.

The teacher will demonstrate:
How to Highlight
Click and drag
Double click on a word
Left margin arrow
Click shift click
When text is highlighted, Enter or any key deletes text. (Edit, Undo to retrieve)

Student Practice: Tell students we will try to decide the quickest way to highlight.
Divide class into two groups, each group highlighting a different way. Once student has text highlighted, they should raise their hand! After each direction, determine which method was faster.

Direction 1: For one word... one group double clicks; the other group, click and drags.
In the first sentence, highlight the word "British".
Reverse groups, now highlight the word "proud".

Direction 2: For a paragraph... one group clicks and drags; the other group uses the left margin arrow. Once you have it highlighted, raise your hand!
Highlight "paragraph 1"
Reverse groups and highlight "paragraph 2"

Direction 3: For a sentence or a group of words...One group, click and drags; the other group, click, shift, click.
Highlight the first sentence in the first paragraph.
Reverse groups and highlight the same sentence.

Discuss the faster ways to highlight. (Point out that click and drag is not a bad method, only one of several good methods to highlight)

The teacher will demonstrate: From the Format menu, demo how to change Font, Style, Size. Demo using the toolbar to perform the same operations.

Student Practice: Change the first paragraph to Arial Font, 14 point type, and regular text.

The teacher will demonstrate: From the Format menu choose Paragraph

Indents and Alignment tab: explain the Alignment icons.
Point out that you do NOT have to highlight to set alignment. Point out that we do not change the Indentation box. Show the Alignment tools on toolbar.

Spacing tab: (first, must highlight the paragraph ) click on the Line Spacing box down arrow to change from single to double spacing(1li=single space, 2li=double space, 3li=triple space).

Student Practice: Talk students through changing the alignment of the first paragraph to right aligned, then centered, the left aligned, noting the difference in each.
Talk students through highlighting the first paragraph and single space the text.

Ask students to close this document (top X in the upper right corner) and reopen the file Britain1dpt.

Teacher Demo: Under the File menu, explain how to use Save As the first time you save a document so you know it will be in the Student Program folder and named correctly. Student directions that say "Remember to save file often" refer to clicking on File, Save AFTER the first time saving (students should be encouraged to do this after each step in the directions is completed). Demo Print Preview (through File, Print Preview or magnifying glass on toolbar). Print Preview is used when student thinks they are finished with their document to look for consistency in their document (all paragraphs indented, spaced the same, regular text, similar aligned , etc).
Talk students through saving and ask them to use Print Preview when they think they are finished to look for consistency in their document.

Summary Strategies
Students will be given an assignment sheet (Britain1DIR) with directions practicing the skills they have learned. (They will work on the Britain1dtp document they have open.)

Re-teaching and Enrichment Activities
Teacher Instruction

To enrich learning, students will practice DTP skills associated with the menu bar tools "View", "Format", and "File", using the document "Warsawdtp".

1. To review last week's lesson, open and run the PowerPoint slide show "IntroWarsaw".
2. Pass out the student directions for Warsaw (WarsawDIR).
3. Instruct students to open the document "Warsawdtp" from Student Activities (or where loaded).
4. Instruct students in saving the document in the proper place (using Save As the first time and File, Save after each step in directions). Instruct students in naming the document.
5. Students should be able to work independently, but individuals may need help with skill review.
6. Use Print Preview to view their document for consistency.
Have students print their documents when finished. To print, use Menu Bar, File, Print (not printer icon on the toolbar as the print window does not come up)
