Cognitive Teaching Strategies
Teacher will pass out the worksheets (Britain2DIR).

Instruct students to open the file "Britain2dtp".

Teacher Demo: give instructions for using the Format tool "Tabs" to help students set a right tab in the header with student name, right aligned and today's date, left aligned. (Question 1 on Britain2DIR)

Teacher will assist student in saving the document to the Student Program folder on the desktop (Save As) and naming the document correctly. (Question 2 on Britain2DIR)(Skill learned in Britain1 lesson)

Teacher Demo: (setting a right tab on the section title of paragraph one) Left align the words "A Brief History" and set a right tab for the words "Treason" on the same line.
Student Practice: Independently practice left aligning the section title of paragraph two (A Brief History) and setting a right tab for the words "The Rack".

Teacher Demo: Review indenting a paragraph by using the tab key on the keyboard.
Students Practice: Indent paragraph one and two. Remind students that if the paragraph is highlighted and they try to use tab key to indent, entire paragraph is deleted. Ask how they would get the paragraph back! (Edit, Undo Editing)

Teacher Demo: Review inserting text into a document by inserting the word "terrible" between "mean" and "torture" in the first sentence. Use "Edit, Undo" to delete the word "terrible". Show what happens when the Insert key on the keyboard is turned on. OVR (for Overtype) shows in lower, right corner of monitor. Try to insert the word again and notice that words are eaten up (typed over).
Student Practice: Insert the words "locked up" between the words "kept" and "in" in the last sentence of the first paragraph (With the Overtype turned on and again with it off).

Teacher Demo: How to "cut and paste" using paragraph two and pasting it above paragraph one.
Students Practice: Repeat the same process to move the paragraph back where it was.

Teacher Demo: Define and demo the term "word wrap" (text automatically moving to the next line when the margin is reached) and discuss the directions "do not worry about any difference in word wrap from the way it appears on the paper".
Students Practice: Work independently on questions 3-7 from the document Britain2DIR. Individual students may need assistance.

Teacher Demo: Open the separate document (spellckdemo) that includes many of the common spell checking errors. Read the document aloud as it explains what the Spelling tool can do. Instruct students to move the window down so that the misspelled word can be seen in the document underneath (since you did not generate this document, you can only guess what it says unless you can see and read the document). Then click Spelling on Tools menu and demo various spelling errors. (Must proofread AFTER spell check to catch the following errors: Microsoft Windows, United States, trust (truss), your (yore), and spell (spill).
Students Practice: Spell check the document Britain2dtp as instructed in Question 8 of "Britain2DIR".

Student Practice: Finish Question 9 of "Britain2DIR".

Summary Strategies
Students will follow the student directions (Britain2DIR) through question 9 to edit paragraph three and paragraph four of the "Britain2dtp" document.

If additional activities are needed, students will work on questions 10 and 11 (Review)
